STEP 5 $18.81 HOURLY/$39,125 ANNUALLY *BASED ON EXPERIENCE

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, drives and operates non-commercial and commercial weight vehicles (over 26,000 pounds) and heavy construction equipment used by the Department of Public Works to perform various maintenance and construction tasks.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Drive and operate non-commercial and commercial weight, single and tandem-axle vehicles and equipment.
• Tow, load, and assist in loading and unloading equipment, tools and materials.
• Trains employees in the essential duties for their position;
• Assists with planning, scheduling, and supervising employees in the maintenance and repairs of the County roads;
• Transport crews and/or materials.
• Plows and sands roads during snow emergencies.
• Complete an operator’s daily checklist for maintenance of equipment.
• Perform preventative and routine maintenance on trucks, tools, and equipment.
• Install special adapters and fixtures to equipment, inspect vehicles, make minor repairs to vehicles and assist the mechanic with major repairs.
• Repair, resurface and rehabilitate roadways. Erect and repair guardrails and traffic signs.
• Mows grass and remove debris from roadways and drainage systems; trim limbs of trees and apply herbicide;
• Participate in safety related training, lead and instruct others in the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor tasks.
• Knowledge of proper safety procedures and PPE utilization at all times to perform job related duties
• Complies with all safety programs, procedures, training, fire drills, COOP plans, and works safely
• Ensures confidentiality of information and records and complies with record retention schedule
• Adhere to the Worcester County Government Rules and Regulations;
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
• 1-year experience in the operation and maintenance of commercial weight vehicles and equipment.
• Basic equipment maintenance experience preferred.
• Knowledge in unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks using hand and power operated tools, and knowledge of safety procedures.
• Oral and written communication skills necessary to follow verbal and written instructions, perform duties independently, and communicate effectively with the general public and coworkers.
• Ability to lead and instruct others, and complete assigned tasks by an established deadline.
• Possession of a valid Class “A” CDL license upon employment and driving record with less than 4 points (MD); Current ICC Physical Examination card, ability to pass ICC drug screen;
• Ability to perform manual physical labor including frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 80 lbs., and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment;
• Tree Trimming Certification upon employment.
• Must be able to operate 13 of the following 13 vehicles/equipment proficiently: belt loader, broom tractor, bucket truck, long reach mower, pay loader, roller, shoulder machine, six-wheel
dump truck, skid steer loader, tandem dump truck, tiger cat, tractor trailer, and tractor/mower.
• Must be able to operate at least 2 of the following 4 special equipment proficiently: dozer, gradall, grader, and paver.
