GRADE 15/STEP 5 $21.99 HOURLY/$45,739 ANNUALLY

JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, drives and operates commercial weight vehicles over 26,000 pounds and heavy construction equipment used by the Solid Waste Division to collect recyclable material and solid waste from remote locations, maintain landfill cells and grounds.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Safety sensitive position requiring Drug & alcohol testing
• Essential personnel subject to emergency call-back with little or no notice to include evening and weekend work if needed
• Pre-employment background check and motor vehicle history
• This position requires work in person Monday-Friday 7:30am-4:00pm and rotating Saturdays as needed for coverage.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Lead and instruct landfill employees in the performance of semi-skilled and skilled labor tasks in the daily operations of the active landfill
• Assist the Superintendent in the day-to-day landfill operations
• Responsible for the proper disposal of all incoming waste as well as any special waste such as asbestos, sludge, and contaminated soils
• Responsible for keeping the active landfill in compliance per our solid waste permit which is closely monitored by the Maryland Department of the Environment, consisting of leachate seep repairs and making sure the proper amount of cover is being placed over the waste and there is no exposed waste at any given time
• Responsible for daily load inspections and any daily reports associated with those inspections
• Responsible for the proper placement of the leachate collection wells
• Assist in scheduling landfill equipment for service and maintenance
• Responsible for the daily active landfill inspections
• Report directly to the Solid Waste Superintendent
• Drive and operate commercial weight, single and tandem-axle vehicles and equipment
• Operates heavy landfill equipment such as bulldozers, track and rubber tire loaders, landfill compactors, off-road dump trucks, and excavators as required to perform assigned tasks
• Tow, load, and assist in loading and unloading equipment, tools and materials
• Complete an operator’s daily checklist for maintenance of equipment
• Perform preventative and routine maintenance on trucks, tools, and equipment
• Inspect vehicles daily, make minor repairs to vehicles and assist the mechanic with major repairs
• Cover recycles cans with tarps for safe travel, haul trash and recyclables to Landfill
• Participates in safety related training,
• Oversees the safety programs, procedures, training, fire drills, COOP plans, etc. and works safely
• Enforces safety standards with all employees.
• Ensures confidentiality of information and records and complies with record retention schedule
• All other duties assigned including but not limited to mowing grass, sorting recyclables, picking up trash, snow removal, etc.
• Adhere to the Worcester County Government Personnel Rules & Regulations.
• Performs other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:
• Knowledge and skill in operation and maintenance of commercial weight vehicles and equipment such as excavator, loader, dozer, compactor, roll-off truck and dump truck.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions; read street signs; keep records and logs; complete written forms; and to communicate effectively with the public and coworkers. Ability to apply acquired knowledge to increasingly varied and complex tasks.
• Ability to perform duties independently and as part of a team to complete assigned tasks by established deadlines.
• Ability to perform manual physical labor including frequent walking, bending, stooping, lifting and carrying heavy objects up to 80 lbs., and the operation of vehicles, tools, and equipment.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• Valid Class B CDL driver’s license and driving record of less than 4 points (MD).

Very Heavy work; Constant viewing and lifting over 20lbs; Frequent talking, hearing, carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting and moving of objects over 50lbs; Occasionally over 80lbs. Known hazards include risks associated with impacts, heat, chemicals, and sharp objects. Requires work outside in the weather.
